Examinations for the Cecchetti Method of ballet are divided into eight grade levels.
At the Sacramento Academy of Dance training for the Grade I examination usually begins at the age of seven, provided the student has had at least one year of training. To undertake the Grade I exam a dancer must be at least eight years of age and be proficient both in technique and posture. The candidate must memorize the syllabus, dance it to perfection and translate instructions from French to English.
The minimum ages for the succeeding examination grades are; nine for Grade II, eleven for Grade III and so on up to age seventeen for grade VIII. The first professional grade is Grade V. This is also the grade at which pointe work begins. At the academy all students are thoroughly prepared for each examination level.
